Pharmaceutical Trials Employing POCT
The following is a partial listing of clinical trials performed to establish efficacy of novel pharmaceuticals that have employed point-of-care testing (POCT) as an integral part of the protocol. This list is not intended to be exhaustive, nor representative of the wide variety of POCT available for integration into pharmaceutical studies. The studies included here are solely a sampling of those that specifically call out the use of POCT in the peer reviewed publication of study results.
Many additional studies have employed POCT, either as a required portion of the protocol, or as an option for specific diagnostic assays. However, many of these trials do not specifically call out the use of POCT in the final publication. Frequently, a sponsor may supply POCT devices and tests for sites without the ability to perform a specific assay in their local laboratory. One such example, not yet in a publication, is the use of POCT NT-proBNP for monitoring cardiac stress. Sites without NT-proBNP capabilities in their local laboratory have been provided instruments and reagents to run this test (personal communications).
