The pharmaceutical manufacturing industry has a significant role to play in mitigating global warming and creating a sustainable future. To achieve this, commitment, collaboration, and innovation are essential. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are already committed to reducing CO2 emissions and waste, and they are now requiring their contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) to implement sustainability metrics.

CDMOs have a responsibility to guide smaller companies and start-ups in achieving their sustainability goals. This includes optimizing logistics and supply chain management, which contribute to a significant portion of emissions. Transitioning from single-use to reusable shippers, reducing landfill waste, and designing more sustainable packaging are key steps in this process.

As the industry continues to develop more cell and gene-based therapies, innovation in renewable energy and refrigeration will be crucial. Embracing environmental social governance (ESG) is becoming increasingly important, and CDMOs are at the forefront of driving sustainability best practices. Establishing baselines and benchmarks, setting targets aligned with the Paris Agreement, and publishing ESG reports are necessary steps for CDMOs.

Collaboration and standardization in data gathering and reporting are also essential for CDMOs to meet the ESG expectations of larger pharmaceutical companies. Cooperating and sharing resources, such as power purchase agreements and innovation, will become more common in the future. CDMOs, as the managers of the supply chain, play a crucial role in this transformation.

The pharmaceutical manufacturing industry must embrace commitment, collaboration, and innovation to limit global warming and create a sustainable future. CDMOs have a vital responsibility in guiding smaller companies, optimizing supply chain management, and driving sustainability best practices. By working together and adopting ESG principles, the industry can make significant strides towards a greener future.
