A feeling of uneasiness washes over you as you pace the sidelines and reflect upon the situation at hand during a closely contested championship game. Your team has enjoyed a great deal of success, making the playoffs in 4 out of the last 5 seasons. However, a number of your veterans are approaching the end of their careers, 3 players in pivotal positions will become free agents in the off-season and you recognize the fact that your window of opportunity is closing fast. You realize it is now or never and a score on this drive will make you world champions, erasing any doubt that this is truly a great team. With 14 seconds left on the clock you signal in the play for this crucial 3rd down and 15 from your opponents’ 47 yard line. The quarterback takes the snap, drops back in the pocket, goes through his progression and throws a dart to his wide out for a 13 yard gain. You stop the clock with your 3rd and final timeout leaving 1 second in regulation. The tension in the stadium is palpable as the kicking unit runs onto the field to attempt a game winning 51 yard field goal. The ball is snapped, the holder gets it down, the kick is away and it is headed right down Broadway. Everyone in attendance holds their collective breath as the ball approaches the goal post. Then in an instant you fall to your knees in anguish as the ball lands in the end zone 2 feet shy of the cross bar.
