Interactive response technology (IRT) systems facilitate patient randomization as well as manage drug inventory and drug dispensation in clinical trials. Randomization and trial supply management (RTSM) is the systems’ most critical function, but applying standard IRT design to the specific needs of personalized medicine trials has been challenging.

Regardless, personalized medicines are thriving and have accounted for about 25% of new drug approvals for each of the past nine years. As the industry continues to embrace personalized medicine, both in terms of expanded research and increasing regulatory approvals, the ability to implement and support an atypical supply chain is crucial.
