A New Approach Against Gastric Cancer
Claudin18 is important in epithelial/endothelial cell function and is overexpressed in several gastrointestinal cancers.
Claudin18 is among 26+ claudin family members essential for tight junctions in epithelial and endothelial cells. There are two splice variants: Claudin18.1 (lung) and Claudin18.2 (stomach). Claudin18.2 is frequently overexpressed in various tumors, including gastric, esophageal, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers. Overexpression is associated with increased cancer cell migration, invasion, metastasis, and clinically poor prognosis.1
Significant unmet need continues to exist in advanced disease.
Approximately one third to one half of patients with gastric/ gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), esophageal, and pancreatic cancer are diagnosed in advanced disease with proportionately fewer patients in Japan due mainly to more active screening programs. Once metastatic, the chances of cure are very low.
