Advancing Health Equity: Community-First Approach To Drive Diversity In Clinical Research
By Kevin Aniskovich

Diverse representation in clinical trials remains a persistent challenge, as many underrepresented communities face barriers such as limited healthcare access and mistrust of medical systems due to historical injustices. This lack of inclusion affects medical advancements, as treatments may not be as effective for populations not adequately represented in research. For example, African Americans constitute about 13% of the U.S. population but make up less than 8% of clinical trial participants, underscoring the need for more inclusive research.
Community-based approaches are proving essential in bridging this gap. By engaging trusted local organizations and creating culturally relevant resources, healthcare providers and researchers can increase awareness and participation in clinical trials. Addressing practical barriers, such as transportation and flexible appointment options, also enables greater participation. Additionally, establishing trial sites within communities and employing principal investigators who reflect the population’s demographics can make trial settings more welcoming. By fostering trust and engaging underserved communities, clinical trials can better reflect the populations they aim to help.
