GLP-1 therapies for weight management have revolutionized the treatment of obesity, providing an effective solution for millions of people struggling with being overweight or obese. These therapies have demonstrated significant success in promoting weight loss, but there are emerging concerns about their broader effects on body composition, which may negatively impact functional activity and physical fitness. Despite the widespread adoption of GLP-1 treatments, there remains a gap in understanding how these therapies affect important health outcomes beyond just weight reduction. Additionally, the role of physical activity in enhancing treatment efficacy has not been thoroughly explored.

In this session of Digital Health Monthly, Dr. Glenn Gaesser shares his extensive research on the intersection of obesity and exercise physiology, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness and activity as critical health outcomes beyond weight loss alone. He will present data on how maintaining physical activity can influence not just body weight, but also overall health and functional capacity. Complementing this, Dr. Sylvain Zorman will introduce the DECODE-Obesity working group, a new initiative aimed at leveraging data from wearable digital health technology to enhance the design of clinical trials and assess the broader health benefits of emerging obesity treatments. By integrating data on physical activity, the group seeks to better understand how these therapies impact health beyond the scale, offering insights that could reshape the future of obesity treatment strategies.
