Durham Technical Community College’s Clinical Trials Research Associate (CTRA) program has long supplied talent to the Research Triangle’s thriving life sciences sector. But, as clinical data roles became increasingly technical, traditional classroom instruction left students underprepared for industry demands. To bridge this gap, Durham Tech partnered with Crucial Data Solutions to integrate TrialKit, a live electronic data capture (EDC) platform, directly into its curriculum.

Far from a demonstration tool, TrialKit became the backbone of experiential learning. Students now design case report forms, configure studies, assign role-based permissions, resolve queries, and manage audit trails within simulated trials that mirror real-world workflows. The results are transformative: students gain confidence, internship readiness, and tangible portfolios featuring annotated CRFs and mock data dictionaries. Employers recognize this proficiency immediately, while students develop a deeper understanding of cross-functional trial roles. The program’s flexibility also supports outreach initiatives, extending STEM engagement into the community. By embedding TrialKit into its pedagogy, Durham Tech has created a model for future-forward, hands-on education in clinical research. The collaboration illustrates how academic-industry partnerships can close skill gaps and prepare students to thrive in an evolving, data-driven field.
