Electronic Data Capture On The Rise, Infographic Reveals

By Cyndi Root

Forte Research Systems recently released an infographic illustrating the rise of electronic data capture, or EDC. The infographic reveals that the EDC/CDMS segment of the eClinical market is worth $900 million and is expected to grow 13 percent through 2018, hitting $5 billion in worth by 2018. According to the infographic, EDC products and services rose to prominence in the 1990s, and have since, continued to grow in popularity. In 2001, 13 percent of trials used EDC, compared to 2009 when 58 percent of trials did.

Platforms offer data entry, data export, query management, hosting, eCRF design, and 21 CRF Part 11 compliance features. The infographic also illustrated some of the evaluation criteria that users found particularly important. In particular, an easy-to-use and intuitive interface took the cake, with 75 percent of EDC users considering this feature particularly important. This was followed closely by support and service at 69 percent, a convenient implementation (68 percent), and affordable cost.

According to the infographic, the EDC also has the potential to offer 49 to 62 percent savings compared to paper. EDC also offers 86 percent reduction in queries, 30 percent reduction in study duration, and a 43 percent reduction in time to database lock.

Drug Information Association

Electronic data capture (EDC) providers assembled recently in San Diego at the DIA (Drug Information Association) 2014. Many of these eClinical providers published press releases regarding their software products and services. Companies such as BBK Worldwide, PatientsLikeMe, and PAREXEL detailed some of their new offerings and explained how EDC assists in clinical trial recruitment and management.

The Drug Information Association (DIA) was founded in 1964 and currently counts members in over 80 countries. The non-profit organization supports drug and drug device discovery, hosts annual conferences, and sponsors subject-specific gatherings. DIA headquarters is in Washington DC, and the organization has offices in the U.S., Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
