How AI Is Revolutionizing Clinical Development

Artificial intelligence (AI), which has been optimizing the preclinical phase of clinical trials for several years, is now transitioning into Phase I–III clinical trials where it is leveraging massive amounts of real-world data (RWD) to garner insights, according to Suzanne Caruso, President of Clinical, Regulatory, and Strategic Intelligence at Norstella’s Citeline.

Caruso discussed use of AI with Bruno Quinney on a recent episode of the Drug Discovery World (DDW) “In Conversation With” podcast, which covers drug discovery and development, pharma, and biotechnology.

During their conversation, Caruso described how AI is being used to accelerate study start-up through protocol design and site selection and feasibility. She also noted that AI combined with RWD can be used to build synthetic cohorts of patients, which would negate the need to use placebo in Phase III trials. And AI and RWD can be harnessed to support patient recruitment by helping to identify patients that meet the eligibility criteria for a clinical trial, she said.
