Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a type of cancer that starts in the lymphatic system when abnormal growths form from white blood cells called lymphocytes. It's the most common hematological cancer, comprising 3% of global cancer diagnoses and deaths. NHL has two main subtypes: aggressive, which spreads quickly (60% of cases, with Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma being the most common), and indolent, which grows slowly (40% of cases, with Follicular lymphoma as the most common subtype). NHL can affect people of any age but becomes more common with age, particularly in adults over 60, and is also more prevalent in men (7 per 100,000) than in women (5 per 100,000).

In 2020, NHL globally accounted for 544,000 new cases and 260,000 deaths, with incidence and mortality rates of 5.80 and 2.60 per 100,000, respectively. Asia had the highest incidence, with over 241,000 cases and more than 50% of related deaths. Europe had nearly 123,000 cases, accounting for 20% of global incidence and 49,700 deaths. The United States had 73,600 cases and 20,800 deaths in 2020.

In 2023, the United States is estimated to have 80,550 new cases and 20,180 deaths from NHL. Australia had a five-year prevalence rate of 80 per 100,000, with over 6,000 new cases and 1,700 deaths in 2020. New Zealand had an incidence rate of 10 per 100,000 and a five-year prevalence rate of 60 per 100,000.

In Asia, the NHL burden has been rapidly increasing for 30 years, and by 2030, it's predicted to reach 307,700 new cases and 175,800 deaths. China alone is expected to have about 117,400 new cases and 72,800 deaths. These disparities are attributed to risk factors and limited access to diagnostic and treatment services.
