Patient engagement is a very broad topic and it is easy for companies to become overwhelmed about where to start. Some sponsors have adopted patient engagement as a lifecycle approach, meaning that the dialogue with patients about things such as their preferences, unmet needs, and more begins early in the clinical development process – even before teams are thinking about protocol design or a specific upcoming clinical trial. Other companies, especially smaller biotech and pharma companies don’t start incorporating patient engagement initiatives until the later stages of a clinical trial. These initiatives can include introducing educational information and providing convenience and support mechanisms during the patient’s participation in a clinical trial.
