The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports having received a higher number of applications for investigational new drugs (INDs) in the past few years. Only a handful of years ago, the number of IND applications received annually was hovering in the 300-400 range. Yet, in the 2018 fiscal year, the FDA received 675 IND applications. And 487 applications were submitted in just the first three quarters of 2019.
