Sleep Assessment In Sleep Disorders

Capturing the reality of chronic insomnia requires looking beyond the four walls of a sleep lab. While clinical assessments provide a controlled snapshot, they often lack "ecological validity"—the ability to reflect how a patient actually sleeps in their own bed. This study demonstrates the power of integrating continuous monitoring through actigraphy to bridge the gap between subjective patient diaries and laboratory data.
By tracking movement and sleep patterns over a multi-week period in a natural home environment, researchers achieved a far more sensitive measurement of treatment efficacy. The results were telling: while traditional single-night lab measures showed no significant change, the continuous objective data revealed statistically significant improvements in both sleep quality and quantity.
