What Sponsors Value Most In CRO Partnerships
By Roula Krayem, Zachary Smith, and Ken Getz

Choosing the right research partner for a clinical trial is one of the most consequential decisions a sponsor makes; yet many organizations may be evaluating those partnerships on the wrong criteria. A survey of nearly 300 CRO engagement reviews across more than 60 research organizations reveals a striking disconnect: while sponsors expect operational factors like project management and financial oversight to drive overall satisfaction, team culture and working relationships emerge as the second-strongest predictor of how a partnership is ultimately rated. The findings also show that structured preferred provider arrangements and focused, fit-for-purpose engagement models consistently outperform broad outsourcing relationships. Preferred partners score significantly higher on trial outcomes, governance, and collaboration — and shorter, more targeted engagements tend to outperform open-ended ones.
If your organization is uncertain about what truly separates strong research partnerships from disappointing ones — or how to structure engagements for better outcomes — use these data-driven findings to rethink how you select, evaluate, and manage your partners.
