Expanding Diabetes-Related Eye Health Equity With The American Diabetes Association® And Genentech

Expanding Diabetes-Related Eye Health Equity

Diabetes poses a significant risk to ocular health, yet many individuals, particularly in underserved communities, encounter substantial barriers to accessing vital eye care. Despite the preventability of 95% of diabetes-related eye diseases through early detection, geographic, financial, and awareness-related obstacles hinder timely intervention. In response, 20/20 Onsite, in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association and Genentech, implemented mobile vision care solutions during the 2024 Step-Out Walk to Stop Diabetes event.

The Mobile Vision Clinic provided immediate diagnostic services, including retinal imaging and visual acuity assessments, directly on-site. Trained technicians and a remote optometrist offered real-time consultations, facilitating referrals to local eye care specialists for those identified with potential issues. This collaboration not only improved access to eye care for marginalized populations but also raised awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations in diabetes management. The initiative highlighted the efficacy of mobile health solutions in promoting health equity and underscoring the transformative potential of technology in community health interventions.
